OPG Announces New Mini Reactor In Darlington, Ontario

Ontario Power Generation has recently announced the launch of a new mini reactor in Darlington, Ontario. This innovative new reactor is Canada’s first small modular reactor that will be funded in part by The Canada Infrastructure Bank. This project will be essential for reaching Canada’s greenhouse gas reduction goal and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
The new mini reactor is based on small modular reactor (SMR) technology. This type of reactor is significantly smaller than traditional nuclear reactors and is carbon-free, which allows for increased flexibility and scalability in terms of energy production. The development of this reactor will help pave the way for this technology to be developed elsewhere in Canada.
One of the key benefits of small modular reactors is that they can generate electricity using low-enriched uranium, which is a safer and more cost-effective alternative to traditional high-enriched uranium. Additionally, the mini reactor in Darlington is designed to be highly efficient, with the ability to produce up to 300 megawatts of electricity before the end of the decade.
The new mini reactor is also expected to significantly reduce emissions, as it does not produce greenhouse gases or other pollutants. This is a major advantage over traditional fossil fuels, which are a leading cause of climate change.
