How to Make Lamp Posts and Signs Last Longer
The key to making lamp posts and signs last longer is to purchase poles made from materials that are resistant to rust and corrosion. Traditional metal lamp posts and signs do not stand up to the wear and tear presented by the weather and other environmental factors. As a result, it’s common to see rusted or failing light poles.
What Materials Make the Best Lamp Post?
At TerraCast Products, we are passionate about making weather resistant light poles and signs. From commercial lamppost sets to residential post sets, all of our poles are made from a unique proprietary blend and constructed for our PolySteel™. Our poles are just as beautiful as they are strong and long lasting.
What is PolySteel™?
Concrete fades and cracks while metal rusts, corrodes and chips – PolySteel™ does none of the above, making it the longest lasting material for lamp posts and signs. We have trademarked the process of PolySteel™ used to construct our resin-blended lampposts. This unique mix of resin is combined with galvanized steel and industrial plastic foam. The result? A superior lightweight pole that can stand up to the elements like nothing else.
We construct our products using a rotational molding process that results in an incredibly strong pole. The process starts by constructing the core of the pole out of galvanized steel, this gives the pole its inner strength. From there, the inner core is surrounded by a thick polyurethane foam to isolate the core and give the pole its shape. On top of that, we add a quarter-inch of Linear Low Density Polyethylene, or LLDPE, to give the pole its final shape and detailing. The end result is a light pole that can truly withstand the elements.
Common materials used to construct light poles include steel and aluminum, although there are issues with both of these materials. They are susceptible to corrosion and will degrade over time with exposure to water, salinity, and pet waste.
Benefits to PolySteel Light Poles
Customizable
All of our PolySteel™ light poles come in standard sizes between 7 and 16 feet. Don’t let this limit your eye for creativity – we are happy to custom create just about anything you can dream up. From custom colors to unique styles and sizes, we’ve got you covered!
Resistant to Corrosion
PolySteel™ poles are resistant to corrosion – it’s nearly impossible for water to get inside and start corroding our poles. On the other hand, the thin layer of baked enamel or powder coat that is placed as the final coating on a traditional metal pole will eventually wear away, allowing corrosive elements to seep inside. From there, rust and corrosion will take over until they compromise the entire pole. That’s because the outer coating simply isn’t thick enough to pass the test of time. All it takes is one small injury – such as getting knocked by a car door or hit with a weed whacker, and the top layer is chipped, thus allowing corrosive elements inside.
Our PolySteel™ poles are built as monolithic, resin-based structures that are tough enough to stand up to the elements.
Resistant to UV Rays
In addition, our resin is baked with ultraviolet inhibitors blended into it. This helps maintain longer lasting vibrant colors for years to come even when exposed to the sun outside.
Rebase, Don’t Replace
If you already have aluminum or metal light poles, the first signs of wear and tear are typically found near the bottom of the pole. As long as damages are not too extensive, we offer the option to rebase your poles instead of replacing them. Salt and moisture in the air tend to enter the bottom of the light pole first, because this is where exterior damage is most common. That’s why we designed a resin lamppost base that attaches to existing light poles, offering a secondary skin of protection against additional damages. Plus, it makes the pole look a lot better. The attachable base affixes to most standard sized light poles. While you can’t undo the damage that’s already been done, it can protect against future damages and eliminate additional entry points.
