How the Penetron range of products can be adopted in metro and tunnel projects

The Penetron crystalline product range is specifically designed to protect concrete in below-grade construction that is exposed to high hydrostatic pressure. Due to this Penetron crystalline products are extensively used in underground construction such as metros, tunnel systems and other similar projects.
Methodology
Penetron products become an integral part of the concrete. When applied to concrete the products form insoluble crystals that effectively seal microcracks, pores and capillaries (up to 0.5mm) against high hydrostatic pressure and the ingress of water-borne chemicals such as sulphates, acids and chlorides. These crystals form due to a hydrophilic reaction involving water, calcium hydroxide and aluminum as well as various other metal oxides and salts contained in the concrete. This way conventional concrete is transformed into a self-healing, permanent water barrier as new cracks (that may occur later in the life of the concrete) will be sealed as soon as water enters.
As a result, concretes with Penetron are impermeable and display an increased durability and service life.
The PENETRON System
The Penetron crystalline range consists of the following products:
- PENETRON – surface-applied, integral crystalline waterproofing coating
- PENECRETE MORTAR – crystalline, repair mortar to repair structurally-damaged concrete
- PENEPLUG – rapid-setting, crystalline-based cementitious compound to stop active leaks
- PENETRON INJECT – crystalline-based, two-component injection grout
- PENETRON ADMIX – crystalline durability and waterproofing admixture
- PENETRON ADMIX SB – crystalline durability and waterproofing admixture in soluble bags
- PENEBAR SW – swellable, hydrophilic waterstops for sealing of construction joints
Metro and Tunnel Projects
The Penetron system of cementitious, crystalline products has been used extensively to protect tunnel and metro construction projects around the world. Its versatile application possibilities provide great flexibility to prevent and/or solve problems at any stage of the construction schedule.
The application can be divided into two parts:
1. Application for existing tunnel and metro structures
Penetron products including PENETRON, PENECRETE MORTAR, PENEPLUG, PENETRON INJECT are used to:
- completely waterproof and protect existing concrete in tunnels, stations and other underground structures
- for the repair of concrete faults (structural cracks, active leaks, honeycombs and other weak concrete areas)
- waterproofing and repair of construction joints (non-moving)
- repair of faults embedded deeply in the concrete (by injection of a cementitious, crystalline injection material)
2. Application for new tunnel and metro structures
Penetron products including PENETRON ADMIX, PENETRON ADMIX SB and PENEBAR SW swellable waterstops are adopted to increase durability, service life and completely waterproof concrete:
PENETRON ADMIX is applied to all new concrete at the time of batching. PENETRON ADMIX is used for:
- the treatment, protection and waterproofing of all in-situ concrete in stations, tunnel segments
- the treatment, protection and waterproofing of all precast concrete elements in stations and tunnel segments (tunnel boring construction)
- the treatment, protection and waterproofing of shotcrete in tunnels and stations (PAES – Penetron Admix Enhanced Shotcrete)
PENEBAR SW waterstops are used to treat non-moving construction joints in stations and between tunnel segments.
