Downspout Planters: Sustainable and Aesthetic Solution to Rainwater Management
October 6, 2023
Managing rainwater in urban areas is a daunting task as excessive runoff can lead to erosion, flooding, and water pollution. Downspout planters have gained popularity due to their eco-friendly approach to capturing and diverting rainwater. These planters not only filter pollutants through plants but also add an aesthetic touch and provide a habitat for wildlife.
TerraCast® Planters are an excellent choice for stormwater filtration as they are water-resistant. Unlike other materials that require a waterproof liner inside the container to prevent rust, corrosion, or rot, TerraCast® Planters are designed to withstand water without any additional support. This makes them worth investing in as they function effectively without requiring much maintenance.
How to Create Downspout Planters
A well-designed downspout planter incorporates multiple layers to ensure effective filtration of stormwater. At the base lies a layer of coarse gravel or aggregate, which prevents soil erosion and enables excess water to drain freely. Over this, a geotextile fabric or landscape fabric acts as a barrier, allowing water passage while blocking soil particles. Above this, a filtering medium composed of materials like sand, activated carbon, and compost further purifies the water, removing impurities and contaminants. Atop the filtering medium, suitable garden soil or planting mix provides a nurturing environment for plants. Finally, strategically chosen vegetation plays a dual role, contributing to both filtration and aesthetic appeal. This comprehensive layering system cleanses stormwater before it reaches the soil, fostering healthier plant growth and enhancing the sustainability of the entire landscaping system.
Choosing Container Materials and Sizes
Choosing a planter is the first step in building a downspout planter. You can create a downspout planter out of any sizable container, however, it is highly recommended to select a material that is resistant to water. The planter size can vary based on the amount of roof runoff to collect. You can calculate the size of your rooftop and determine the type of diverter technique that is suitable for your project, which will allow you to limit the flow of roof runoff to the planter and minimize overflow.
TerraCast® resin planters are not affected by water and are durable and maintenance-free, which makes them the perfect option for creating downspout planters. They allow for better flexibility because they do not come with pre-drilled drainage holes, allowing for easy adjustment onsite.
