Case Study: Valley Health System’s New Valley Hospital

The Valley Hospital is a new, 890,000-square-foot replacement patient hospital and medical campus in Paramus, New Jersey. It’s a fully accredited, not-for-profit, 450-bed hospital with a full range of emergency, inpatient, and outpatient services, including acute care for the elderly along with cancer, heart, palliative, and critical care services.

Case Study: Valley Health System’s New Valley Hospital

The hospital’s health system, Valley Health, wanted a new campus with more than 350 private inpatient rooms, along with a new dedicated women’s pavilion and emergency department. The new campus had to reflect Valley Health’s 50-plus years of compassionate care and community support in its design and implementation.

The health system also wanted clear sightlines into patient and nursery rooms from hallways, nurse stations, and alcoves, along with the ability to discreetly monitor patient progress and activity alongside easy-to-use privacy options.

Specifically, patient rooms required a vision panel above the nurse station for easy viewing by staff. Glass panels in doors were also required to allow for visibility, when desired, when the door is closed to minimize noise from the corridor.

To achieve this, Unicel Architectural supplied more than 1,000 Vision Control® and Vision Control® Mini units for interior use in windows, sliding doors, and swing doors, including:

  • 400-plus Vision Control units with dual fan-shaped thumbwheel operators for windows
  • 330-plus Vision Control units with dual fan-shaped thumbwheel operators for swing doors
  • 150-plus Vision Control Mini units for sliding doors
  • 20-plus Vision Control units with 45-minute fire-rated glazing on one side, and laminated lead glass on the opposing side
Vision Control® insulating glass units feature precision-engineered louvers that offer seamless control over vision, light, temperature, and sound. Unlike traditional curtains or blinds, Vision Control® units are hermetically sealed within glass, eliminating cleaning challenges and minimizing infection risks.

For this project, the majority of Vision Control® and Vision Control® Mini units were installed with standard glazing. They were seamlessly integrated into observation nursery rooms, patient rooms, nurse stations, alcoves, and various swing and sliding doors throughout the new hospital.

Today, healthcare professionals at Valley Hospital benefit from enhanced visibility into patient rooms through interior windows and glass panels in doors. The louvers provide a flexible solution, enabling precise control over patient privacy and sound levels, even from outside the room.
