Creating these two ultra-high-end single-family homes involved transforming one of the few remaining parcels of vacant land in the highly desirable Philadelphia neighborhood of Fitler Square, which was previously used as a surface parking lot.

The site is a rare three-sided endcap to a beautiful block, and Lo Design's primary goal for the design was to take advantage of the "corner" for both houses. "We split the lot down the center to provide two square-shaped corner sites, providing the maximum privacy, daylight, and window walls for both homes," notes Lo Design.

BLENDING IN WHILE STILL STANDING OUT

Because these new homes are located adjacent to some of Philadelphia's most stately brick rowhomes, brick was essential to making the project feel both contextual and contemporary. "We find that many "new" brick homes stand out and can feel flat; the selection of Winter Mist Sanded Rustic brick, with its mottled, soft tones, gave a rich depth to the facade that was unmatched by other options that we considered," Lo Design said "It also felt like a good match to the cast stone detailing used throughout the facade, which helped to achieve the monolithic and stately feel of the facade."

The project intends to blend with the context in its massing and materiality while contrasting with its color and texture to read as two contemporary but stately residences. The vertical divisions used in the facade detailing are intended to represent the rhythm of the neighboring 16' - 18' wide rowhomes and break down the broad faces of the building. Wood was used at entries to bring warmth and additional texture to the thresholds.
