What Are the Levels of Bullet-Resistant Doors?

There are eight levels of bullet-resistant doors available at TSS. These levels are based on the UL 752 Standard for Bullet-Resisting Equipment. Level 1 bulletproof doors are tested to stop three shots from a 9mm handgun, Level 8 is tested to stop five shots from a 7.62mm rifle.

The right level of bulletproof door for your facility will depend on the threats you want to protect from—something the bulletproof experts at TSS can help you identify. In this blog, we outline helpful information that can help you determine what style and level of bullet-resistant door might be right for you.

How the UL 752 Levels of Bullet-Resistance Applies to Bulletproof Doors

The UL 752 Standard for Bullet-Resisting Equipment is how most ballistic barrier companies measure and articulate their products’ performance. This standard provides definitive criteria for measuring construction materials’ bullet resistance and provides minimum expectations for how bulletproof a door is, based on the caliber of the firearm and the number of shots.

This standard includes 10 different levels of protection, but only Levels 1 through 8 are commonly used in commercial settings. If you’re looking for a certain level of protection or protection from a specific type of firearm, the UL 752 provides a helpful framework to guide your choice.

UL 752 Levels 1 – 3

These levels can stop shots from various handguns, such as 9mm up to a .44 Magnum. The standard specifies three shots within a four-inch triangle. These levels of bulletproof protection are often used in convenience stores, pharmacies, and banks.

UL 752 Levels 4 – 5

Levels 4 and 5 can stop a single shot from a high-velocity rifle. These levels encompass a .30-06 caliber rifle (Level 4) and a 7.62mm rifle (Level 5). These levels of bulletproof protection are typically used for government or military facilities, although we’re increasingly recommending doors at these levels in schools.

UL 752 Levels 6 – 8

Levels 6 through 8 can stop five shots from high-velocity rifles, ranging from a 9mm submachine gun up to a 7.62mm rifle. Historically, these levels of protection are typically reserved for military applications, embassies and other high-level government facilities, but are becoming more commonplace in other settings.

This is one of the reasons UL is the most-used standard: it is modern, it is very specific, and it’s independently verified. When you install a ballistic barrier tested to UL 752, you can be assured that it is proven protection for you and your staff.

Bullet-Resistant Door Styles

We offer bullet-resistant doors at UL Levels 1 through 8. So, no matter what level of protection you’re looking for, there is a door that meets those needs and blends in with your existing aesthetics. Our door styles are available in a variety of configurations and materials: slab, full vision, half vision, side-lite, and view-lite, and all-glass. All our bullet-resistant door styles can be made into double doors.

Plus, because bulletproof doors are heavier than standard, non-rated doors, our bulletproof doors’ hinges and frames are specially designed and engineered to be easy to use, stable over time, and resistant to attacks.

Aluminum Bulletproof Doors

Aluminum bulletproof doors are one of our most popular options, since aluminum is so versatile. Aluminum doors are suitable in either interior or exterior applications and are available in Levels 1-8. Aluminum doors can range from 200 to 450 pounds depending on style and level of protection, but remain easy to use.

Wood Bulletproof Doors

While movies make it seem like wooden doors are already bulletproof, non-rated wooden doors will not stop a bullet. Our doors are fabricated from a bulletproof fiberglass core and wood veneer, giving you the aesthetic benefits of wood and the bulletproof qualities of ballistic fiberglass. These beautiful interior doors add nearly undetectable security at critical locations within your facility, and are available in Levels 1-8, and the weight can range from 160 to 440 pounds, depending.

Steel Bulletproof Doors

One of the most robust bulletproofing materials, steel is commonly used in industrial applications for both interior and exterior doors. These doors are available in Levels 1-8, and the weight can range from 160-450 pounds.

Glass or Acrylic

Glass and acrylic bulletproof doors provide clear bulletproof protection in Levels 1-3. These products are limited to interior use. These doors are also a lighter weight, at 160-225 pounds, with acrylic being a lighter and more cost-effective option.

Acrylic doors are unique in that they require no framing, which offers an unobstructed view of any suspicious activity. Glass is an elegant choice for executive suites and offices, and unlike acrylic, it does not require any special cleaning solutions.
