Unveiling our all-new Daylighting Academy

September 1 marks the unveiling of a significant new educational course from Draper. The Daylighting Academy, co-sponsored by Phifer, is the newest course offered as a part of the Architectural Record Academies of Digital Learning.

While Draper has in the past offered online classes for architects, this new daylighting academy represents a major step forward in the content we share, and the continuing education credits that can be earned.

According to BNP Media’s online Continuing Education Center where the academy is being hosted,

“Each academy will provide an editorial-rich curriculum that includes courses, articles, research reports, live webinars, and other educational materials instructionally designed into an 8-hour program focused on a specific building type.”

The daylighting academy includes a new AIA-certified course entitled “Specifying Interior and Exterior Shading Systems.” This course examines the main health, energy, sustainability, and productivity advantages and disadvantages of controlled daylighting. It describes shading system options, including interior, exterior, and between glazing. Participants also learn how automation in shading systems can greatly improve performance, comfort, and productivity, and how to evaluate and specify the most appropriate shading systems for projects.

The academy will also include these current Draper AIA courses:

  • A Simple Guide to Motorized Shades and Controls
  • Managing Daylight with Automated Solar Control
  • Managing Heat and Light through Exterior Shading Systems
Over the next several months, we will continue adding content relating to daylighting and daylighting control strategies, including white papers, case studies, and other educational materials.

Architects who successfully complete the Daylighting Academy receive eight continuing education units from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and a digital badge in recognition of their accomplishment.

Other Architectural Record Academy subjects include multifamily housing, sustainability, wood structures, and education.

The Draper and Phifer Daylighting Academy is also open to the public. To check out the academy, click here. You need to register for the CE Center to review the course.
