The Massachusetts Port Authority was in need of a modern parking facility for their Central Parking Expansion at Logan International Airport. Because of the facility’s prominent location, the design needed to provide a structure that not only incorporated sustainable materials, but was also elegant and dynamic.
EXTECH partnered with Arrowstreet to design a kinetic wall based around 6-inch square curved aluminum ‘flappers’ which were assembled into over 350 unitized panels. The panels provide an array of benefits – they allow air to flow through and ventilate the building, permit visibility from the inside, and deflect Solar Heat Gain.
All told, the façade is comprised of 48,000 custom-made flappers, resulting in an eye-catching aesthetic that visually shows the dynamic patterns of the wind.
