Opened officially in 2019, the Artesia Aquatic Center, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the Southwest, has become a community hot-spot in the small New Mexico town. Located on 10 acres of land, the $19 million center – which opens its space to both the community and local high school for competitions – features a large outdoor recreation area that offers a small zero-entry pool with a 25-foot tall oil rig water feature, a 4,000 square foot recreational pool in the shape of a bulldog, the high school’s mascot, as well as a lazy river and three large slides. Adjoining the outdoor space is a 14,300 sq. ft. indoor facility that includes a 25-yard competition pool, a three lane 60 ft. training pool, bathrooms and changing rooms, a party room, and a concession area.

In an effort to enhance the indoor pool areas, natural light is brought in via a series of Guardian 275® translucent panel single slope skylights. These systems provide soft natural light to the pool area without annoying glare or hot-spots common with glass systems – which also benefits casual users of the facility as well as athletes and spectators. Guardian 275® translucent skylights are also perfect for controlling solar heat gain, which is especially important in the southwest where the sun can be harsh and temperatures routinely climb above 100 degrees in the summer months. Controlling solar heat gain can also have positive effects on energy costs, as it helps reduce strain on HVAC systems.

The effort to create this state-of-the-art center began in earnest in response to community outcry after the closure of the Artesia High School Natatorium in 2013. When asked about the goal of the center before its construction, Sandra Borges, president of the Artesia Aquatic Center Foundation (AACF), a non-profit organization that utilized volunteers and area professionals to develop and implement a plan to raise private funds, stated “Our ultimate goal is to pave the path for a complex that will serve a variety of our community’s needs, from playtime to swim lessons, team training, rehabilitation, and overall health and fitness.” In creating a destination for local families as well as a hub for regional events, the AACF has also provided an opportunity for business enhancement and development in the area.
