Specification WFE-10FP-10 One Way Roof Vent
Roof vents are used to reduce vapor pressure under the membrane resulting from moisture in the insulation or substrate. They may also be used in conjunction with Ventsulation Felt when parapet or roof edge venting is not practical. Placement of vents depends on job conditions but there should be a minimum of one vent for each 10 squares (93 m2 ) of roof area.
To install the vent over smooth surfaced APP modified bitumen membranes heat the area of the membrane where the vent is to be located, with a propane torch. When a sheen forms on the compound place the vent onto the membrane. Mineral surfaced membrane require a 18" x 18" (457 mm x 457 mm) smooth surface APP material be installed over the area to receive the vent. The vent will be flashed with a piece of the membrane material with minimum dimensions of 24" x 24" (610 mm x 610 mm). Cut a hole in the center of the flashing material 5" (127 mm) in diameter. Heat the back surface of the material until a sheen forms on the compound. Place the flashing over the vent and press the material onto the roof membrane. Do Not Torch Directly to the Vent. A modified bitumen compound bleedout at all laps of 1 /8" to 3 /8" (3 mm to 10 mm) is desired. All seams without a 1 /8" to 3 /8" (3 mm to 10 mm) bleedout must be sealed with a trowel. Heat the trowel with a propane flame, lift the base flashing, then apply the flame to both sides of the lap area and smooth the melted compound evenly to form a seal.
Caution: Improper use of these materials and application equipment can result in severe burns, and/or damage to property. The mechanic must install these materials using the techniques recommended by JM and those found in "A Guide to Safety: Torch-On Modified Bitumens" available from the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association.
